This edition – ‘South Africa losing out on foreign investment’ – follows up on the June Fast Facts, which looked at fixed investment in South Africa. In this issue, the IRR gives an overview of investment in South Africa by foreigners as well as of South Africans’ investments across the globe. Worth noting is that, while the value of foreign investment in South Africa used to exceed the value of South African investments offshore, the relationship between the two is now reversed, as investing in the country becomes less appealing. At the same time, the country is increasingly exposed to speculative portfolio inflows, which have a tendency to be unstable.
