The rise of the non-voter

Chart of the week

This chart shows voting trends, highlighting the rise of the non-voter.

Eligible voters refers to anyone who is a South African citizen and is older than 18, regardless of whether they are registered to vote or not.

Non-voters as a share of total eligible voters rose from 14% in 1994, to 54% in 2019.

In 2019, ANC support as a share of all eligible voters was only 27%.

Based on these trends, voter apathy will play a key role in this year's election.
