The education chapter of the South Africa Survey tracks trends in education inputs, outputs, and quality. Inputs include the education budget, teaching resources, facilities at schools, and levels of enrolment from pre-school to university. Outputs include an assessment of the education profile of the population by race, age, and sex. The output of the school system by subject and race attracts close attention. So too does the output of the tertiary education system by race, and field of study. The chapter provides a holistic overview of the skills available to the South African economy today and those that will become available over the short and medium term.
